The NAEMT/IAFC First on the Scene (FOTS) course is a comprehensive certified training. FOTS is a standard 7-hour, in-person curriculum developed to teach lay-responders and the general public how to respond to life-threatening emergencies until EMS arrives.

The NAEMT First on the Scene (FOTS) course fills a critical gap in the emergency survival chain by turning bystanders into active immediate responders.

Here is why this course is uniquely beneficial for communities, businesses, and regular citizens:

1. High-Impact, Low-Stress Training

  • Accessible to Anyone: Unlike complex medical certifications, FOTS assumes zero prior medical knowledge. It uses clear, non-technical language to teach life-saving skills.

  • Confidence Over Perfection: The curriculum focuses heavily on building the confidence to act. In an emergency, hesitating out of fear is the biggest obstacle; FOTS breaks down that barrier through repetitive, simple actions.

2. All-in-One Critical Lifesaving Curriculum

Instead of taking three separate classes, FOTS packages the most critical elements of emergency response into a single afternoon:

  • Stop the Bleed: Teaches wound packing and tourniquet use—crucial for vehicle accidents, industrial mishaps, or severe cuts.

  • Hands-Only CPR & AED: Focuses on the most effective immediate actions for sudden cardiac arrest without the complexity of rescue breaths.

  • The Modern Threats: Covers two of the fastest-growing public safety emergencies: opioid overdoses (Naloxone/Narcan) and severe allergic reactions (Epinephrine/EpiPen).

3. Focuses on the "Platinum Minutes"

When a major injury or cardiac arrest occurs, a victim can bleed out or suffer permanent brain damage within 3 to 5 minutes. Even the fastest EMS agencies typically take 7 to 10 minutes to arrive.

FOTS teaches the immediate actions required to keep a patient alive during those first critical minutes before professional help takes over.

4. Prioritizes Responder Safety

A key benefit of the FOTS curriculum is its heavy emphasis on Scene Safety. Students learn to assess a situation before rushing in, ensuring they don't become a second victim. This includes understanding environmental hazards, traffic dangers, and when it is necessary (or dangerous) to move an injured person.

5. Standardized, Globally Recognized Credential

  • Backed by Experts: Developed jointly by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the content represents the gold standard in evidence-based first-aid education.

  • Official Certification: Participants receive an official NAEMT FOTS certificate, which is an excellent addition to workplace safety portfolios, resume updates, or community leadership credentials.
